HONORING DEDICATION, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND COMMUNITY
Among the many traditions celebrated at the Chicagoland International Pipe Show, few are as prestigious or heartfelt as the Doctor of Pipes and Master of Pipes awards. These honorary titles—bestowed by the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club (CPCC)—recognize individuals whose lifelong dedication, creativity, and service have helped shape and advance the art and culture of pipe smoking.
THE ORIGINS OF THE AWARDS
The Doctor of Pipes program began in 1998 at the Chicago Pipe Show, when the very first honors were presented to Frank Burla and Tom Dunn. The CPCC established the award to recognize extraordinary contributions to the pipe community, whether through craftsmanship, education, writing, innovation, or leadership.
Each year, two new Doctors of Pipes are selected:
- One from within the pipe and tobacco industry
- One from the pipe-smoking hobbyist community
Since its founding, the program has celebrated figures whose influence extends far beyond their own work—people who have built businesses, written books, developed blends, taught others, organized pipe shows, and served as ambassadors for the hobby. The nomination process is uniquely peer-driven. Only existing Doctors of Pipes may nominate candidates, submitting summaries of their achievements to be reviewed and voted upon by all living Doctors. With each vote, the community upholds a standard of excellence and tradition that has become one of the highest honors in the world of pipes.
THE BIRTH OF THE MASTER OF PIPES
As the decades passed, the CPCC recognized that many younger enthusiasts were making outstanding contributions to the hobby. To encourage and celebrate this next generation, the Master of Pipes award was introduced in 2017. The first honorees were David Shain and Sykes Wilford, marking the beginning of a new tradition. This award recognizes individuals under the age of 45 who have demonstrated at least ten years of dedication to the hobby or industry. Like the Doctor of Pipes, it is awarded annually to one industry professional and one hobbyist. Remarkably, Sykes Wilford later became the only individual to receive both titles, bridging the legacy of the Masters with the tradition of the Doctors.
QUALIFICATIONS AND NOMINATION PROCESS
The awards are not open for self-nomination. Instead, recognition comes through observation and appreciation from within the community. Current Doctors of Pipes carefully consider candidates who have:
- At least 20 years (for Doctor of Pipes) or 10 years (for Master of Pipes) of continuous involvement in the pipe community.
- Demonstrated exceptional commitment to education, craftsmanship, research, collecting, or the advancement of pipe culture.
- Made significant contributions to the hobby or trade—through organizing shows, publishing, mentoring, manufacturing, or advocacy.
Candidates may come from one of two broad categories:
- Hobbyist: Collectors, educators, writers, or researchers who have enriched the culture of tobacciana through knowledge-sharing and community engagement.
- Industry: Professionals in the trade—manufacturers, retailers, importers, blenders, writers, or promoters—whose work uplifts the industry and inspires a positive image of the pipe-smoking tradition.
CELEBRATING THE LEGACY
Since 1998, the title of Doctor of Pipes has been awarded to over fifty distinguished individuals, and the Master of Pipes title to more than a dozen. Their collective achievements reflect decades of artistry, craftsmanship, mentorship, and generosity. These honorees are the historians, craftsmen, innovators, and leaders whose work ensures the survival and vitality of the hobby. Some have designed groundbreaking pipes, others have blended legendary tobaccos, authored books, or organized major international events. All have contributed to the community in ways that inspire and educate future generations. At the Chicago Pipe Show Awards Dinner, held each spring, the newest Doctors and Masters are formally announced—an evening filled with camaraderie, applause, and celebration of shared passion.
WHY THESE AWARDS MATTER
While the titles “Doctor” and “Master of Pipes” may sound whimsical to outsiders, within the community, they represent the highest form of respect and gratitude. They acknowledge those who have given their time, talent, and passion to preserve and advance a centuries-old art form. If the pipe world had its own version of the Oscars, these awards would be it. Each name added to the list tells a story of dedication, craftsmanship, and friendship—the foundation of the pipe-smoking community itself.
LOOKING AHEAD
As the CPCC and the Chicago Pipe Show continue to grow, the Doctors and Masters of Pipes tradition remains a symbol of excellence and unity. These honors connect generations—celebrating the masters who built the community and encouraging new enthusiasts who will carry the flame forward. Through the quiet glow of briar and the shared conversations that follow, the legacy of the Doctors and Masters of Pipes continues—one bowl, one story, and one friendship at a time.
