Dirk was born and raise on a farm in northern Germany. After school, he worked for several years as a cabinet maker before deciding to continue his studies. He then went to design school to pursue a degree in product design, having always liked the combination of craftsmanship and design. The ritual of pipe smoking fascinated him, and so he decided to make a pipe as a way to combine his many interests and expertise. Since 2011, Dirk has been a full time pipemaker with his work being celebrated by collectors all around the world.
David S. Huber has been a professional Pipe Maker for 10 years. During that time, he has been privileged to study with several of the most renowned pipe makers in the world and to garner a global following among tobacco pipe collectors and enthusiasts. He has been honored with a number of accolades for his work, including Best Pipe in Show at Kansas City in 2015 and Best Pipe in Show at Las Vegas in 2019. His passion for pipe making and teaching led him to offer pipe making instruction to new and aspiring pipe makers, beginning in 2017, as well as leading the Triangle Area Pipe Show (TAPS) Pipe Making Seminar from 2017 to 2019 and joining the team of instructors for the Chicago Pipe Making Seminar in 2023. He is delighted to participate in this year’s “Battle of the Briar.” Let’s make some dust!
Pete began pipe making in 2008 while still touring full-time with his band Sanctus Real. Living in Nashville, he began spending his days off from the road learning how to make pipes in the shops of Jody Davis, Todd Johnson, and Bruce Weaver. He began selling pipes during this time under the brand Prevost Pipes. In 2013, Pete came off the road to spend more time with his family and helped start BriarWorks alongside Todd. Eventually Pete took on the role of President at BriarWorks and moved the factory to Columbia, TN where he expanded the business to have a bar and lounge as well. He continues making a limited number of his own handmade pipes each year while running BriarWorks, which is the home of the Muletown Pipe Show each year.
