CHICAGO TAX PROPOSAL:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing an OTP increase to pay for a one week summer transition program for all incoming high school freshmen, and two weeks of summer school for eighth graders identified as “drop-out” risks.

Specifically, the tax plan includes:

15 cents on EVERY mini cigar.

90 cents on EVERY full sized cigar.

$6.60 on EVERY ounce of roll-your-own tobacco including PIPE TOBACCO.

$1.80 on EVERY ounce of smokeless chewing tobacco sold in cans.

Obviously,  this proposal will not only drive business outside the city limits, and to the internet, and is bound to fall short of the $6 million dollars that it will need to support the special interest programs of Mayor Emanuel!! This only applies to the City of Chicago for now, but where will it end?

For more information, please go to the Cigar Association of Illinois OR contact Julie Neumann at julie@cigarsandmore OR (847) 980-8901.

Why should this be of any concern to you? It will drive establishments like Iwan Ries or Up down Tobacco Shop out of business, or at least put a SEVERE hurt on them!!

SHOW REPORT:

THE 2016 CHICAGO PIPE SHOW IS SOLD OUT!!! Thank you to ALL of our exhibitors who are attending the 2016 show!!! However, we always have cancellations for whatever reasons, so please feel free to send in an exhibitor form (or email our website with your information), and you will be placed on our waiting list.

PIPE MAKING SEMINAR:

The Chicago Pipe Show is now taking reservations for the 2016 pipe making seminar. 12 applicants will be accepted for the seminar on a first come/first served basis. This year the cost of the seminar is $125.00 PAID IN ADVANCE to confirm your reservation. Each participant will receive a pre-drilled briar block with stem. During the seminar, the participants will be taught and assisted in the finishing of a complete pipe by world famous pipe makers. Lee Von Erck is the lead instructor. This year, there will be more demonstrations of pipe making techniques, and Joe Nelson will join the many great pipe makers who instruct participants each year. Rex Poggenpohl and Mike Butera will also be there. The pipe that you complete is yours to take home. To reserve your place in the seminar, please email Craig Cobine at porshcigar@aol.com . If possible, the instructors also plan to demonstrate disc grinder shaping and stem tenon turning.

This seminar fills up rapidly, so the time to make your reservation is NOW!!!

PHEASANT RUN RESORT:

We suggest that you make your 2016 hotel reservation sooner than later!! We have been advised that the “Courtyard” rooms WILL NOT be available for occupancy in 2016!! The “Tower” and the “golf” rooms are the ONLY rooms that will be available. Your stay at Pheasant Run helps the Chicago Show to continue. So PLEASE help us, and stay at Pheasant Run for the show!! NEW/OLD TOBACCO RELEASE:

One of our members, Pat V., has been working in collaboration with Mr. Dan Johnson (The Standard Tobacco Company of Pennsylvania), and Saturday night brought in samples of the following tobaccos. They are:

John Cotton’s No.1: A light Latakia blend with lots of Orientals and Virginia.

John Cotton’s Nos.1&2: Has more Latakia plus a blend of Orientals and Turkish along with a base of Virginia.

John Cotton’s Smyrna: Which is a medium-full Latakia blend, with a healthy amount of Turkish tobaccos.

Bengal Slices: Which is a rich crumble cake with Latakia, Virginia, bright Orientals and a touch of Black Cavendish with a light top note added.

War Horse Ready Cut: Which is a rich blend of Burley, Red Virginia, a good amount of Dark Fired and some Perique with a mild flavoring added. It’s got a nice “Nick Kick” but is pretty smooth.

Pat informed me that there will be samples of each at the “West Coast Show” (Las Vegas), and that they should be available in tins as of the first of December through www.pipesandcigars.com

Well, that’s it for this time, hope to see many more of our members at our November meeting…

In this seminar, you will be making a pipe from “raw materials”, which are a block of briar wood, and a length of vulcanite rod. The briar block will need to be drilled for both the tobacco chamber and draft holes. The length of vulcanite rod will be turned on a metal lathe, and then hand finished.

The fee for the seminar will be $150.00 . To be eligible to take this seminar, you MUST have successfully completed the “basic” pipe making seminar. We will be taking reservations right after the first of the year. The number of students (due to space restrictions) will be limited to 8. More info to follow in upcoming months…
